Heart of Glass
Poetry shortlisted and published in the 2022 Hammond House Anthologies

There is a patch of sky

that takes its place

comfortably

above my soft glass window

Billowed cloud

Immaculate cotton bloom

It leaves

And another takes its place

A blot delightful onto pale blue

Sea foams

From top

Not bottom

As they pass

My mind is at ease

Pressed against

Warm tinted glass

Yet the sky is out of reach

I hold out expectantly

and yield to emptiness

no air between

Wings I find on my back

from my yearning to fly

Become Icarus

with more troubled mind

I see not feel

as day turns to night

and night turns into day

yet again

Seasons change

I remain the same

Pining for air

beyond crystalline chrome confines

Now it is grey

the tempest storm brews like God’s fury

within, without it rages

yet in this comfort I at last yearn to break free

So in this holy hour I steady my strained pinions

as I take one final desperate look

and in shattered glass

I fall and take flight!
